Here’s all you need to know about this prestigious award.
Who is Hideki Yukawa?
Hideki Yukawa is a Japanese theoretical physicist. Yukawa won the Nobel prize in 1949 for physics due to his research in elementary particles. He also was the first Japanese Nobel laureate for his prediction of the pi meson or pion particles. He got his undergraduate degree from Kyoto Imperial University, now Kyoto University, where he stayed on to lecture for another four years. He moved to Osaka imperial university, now known as Osaka University, where he pursued his doctorate in 1938. While lecturing at Osaka University, he proposed and published his theory of mesons, explaining the interaction between neutrons and protons.
His research became a significant influence on research into elementary particles, which became a massive part of nuclear and high-energy physics. He left Osaka university to become a professor at Kyoto, where he earned a Decoration of Cultural Merit from the Japanese government and the Imperial Prize of the Japan Academy. Yukawa also held faculty positions at Columbia University and the institute of advanced study in Princeton. It was while he was teaching at Columbia university that he got the Nobel Prize. The list of academic accolades he received are numerous, and it comes as no surprise that he inspired this literary award.
