What Are Some Important Things to Know About the IB?

IB Schools

In recent years, there has been a drastic shift in the education industry. The challenges have increased, and so has the competition for the students. Navigating the most reliable path for future outcomes has become quite tricky too. And since your child’s career path and university courses depend upon the subjects chosen in their mid-teens, it is worth comprehending the detailed information of the syllabus before things begin!

By enrolling your child in an international baccalaureate diploma at the best japan school, you can prepare him/her for competitive university entry, future prospects and a promising life beyond.

But, before you proceed any further, it is worth comprehending details about the course itself. In this article, we will share some insightful details on IB schools, enabling you to make a sound choice for your child’s future.

What is an International Baccalaureate Organization?

The origin of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme dates back to 1968. It was founded by Educators in Geneva to help students develop and prepare for university life as well as careers beyond that.

After its inception, the IB diploma programme for the high school upperclassmen was the first program offered by the organization that was followed by two other programs, such as, Middle Years Programme for students between 11 to 16 years of age and the primary program for students between 6 to 12 years of age. It was only recently in the year 2012; the fourth and last IB program was launched – Career-Related Programme.

Similar to other programs, even a career-related programme was intended for the high school students with the aim of helping them for their future career prospects.

The aim of the International Baccalaureate is to develop inquisitive and knowledgeable young minds, willing to create a better world via intercultural understanding and respect.

IB programmes provide students with unique sixth form experience along with a world-class all-around education.

Why Should You Consider the IB Programme for Your Child?

If you wish to maximize the academic ability, intellectual capacity and character of your child to become a future leader, then IBDP is the best education program for your child. Plus, IB programmes are offered and recognized worldwide.

This means that students from a variety of different countries will end up learning a similar curriculum during their high school years. So, once the student is capable enough to apply for colleges, the institutes of higher education will have the knowledge of what the student’s high school curriculum consists of. They will have an idea of whether the student has met the college entry requirement or not.

And since the IB programme has worldwide popularity, many colleges across the globe have policies that recognize the IB coursework that students have completed in their high school. In some institutions, just the IB exam’s qualifying grades are enough to provide the college credits. While some other institutes may not offer similar facilities, they do allow students to skip ahead past their introductory-level classes.

Besides, the IB diploma programme aims at offering the students with both depth and breadth of academic study. The subject curriculum covers more than just science and humanities; it covers languages, arts to ensure the students are neither required to specialize at just 16 nor restrict their university choices.

Details About the Subject, Assessment and More

Along with the six academic subjects, including two languages, humanities, mathematics, experimental science and arts/an additional course from the above mentioned five subject areas, all IB students require following a course in the theory of knowledge.

This means the student is required to write a 4000-word research extended essay on a subject of his/her own choice but on college-level standard, as well as take part in more than 150 hours of non-academic activities that deal with creativity, physical action and community service.

The assessment is done on a combination of final examinations along with the course work that is assessed by external examiners across the world and by internal evaluation. The IB examination for all the students worldwide is held on the same day. In the northern hemisphere, the examinations are held in May, and in the southern hemisphere, the exam is held in October.

Each subject is scored from 1 to 7, and up to 3 extra points are rewarded for the theory of knowledge essays and the extended essay. A minimum of 24 points is required for a student to earn an IB diploma and 45 points is the maximum.

Compared to other exams and systems, IB schools are more holistic and look at the overall result. A student can obtain a decent diploma with good marks in their higher and comparatively low marks in the standard courses. Since there is a huge room for misinterpretation, a global score is best to prefer when it comes to measuring the score.

The Outcome of Enrolling Your Child in An IB School

It is quite visible from the details mentioned above that the IB diploma offers immense breadth due to the number of subjects it covers as well as its ability to develop the personality of the student using additional components like creativity activity, sports, extended essay projects and theory of knowledge.

IB is better suited for students who enjoy a more challenging environment and independent research. Even though the programme is a time-consuming endeavour, it tends to help students gain more on a long term basis. Universities love the IB programme. In fact, many universities seek to recruit IB students because they have both breadth and depth of knowledge, especially in the higher levels of subjects.

An analysis conducted by the Higher Education Statistics Agency of UK found that IB students were more likely to attend a top 20 ranking universities and even are more likely to get a first-class degree and be among the top of their class.
