‘Building confidence, one gavel at a time’: GIIS Counsellor’s Vision

Learning School

Welcome to the world of the Gavel Club, where the spotlight is on YOU!

And by “you”, I mean every student who’s brave enough to grab a mic, and speak in front of their peers.

As the Club Counsellor, I’m there to ensure that our meetings are not only about crafting perfect speeches but also about learning how to lead with confidence, tackle real-world challenges, and—let’s be honest—have a little fun along the way.

Let’s break down the vision: ‘Step up, Speak Out’

As the Club Counsellor at GIIS East Coast Campus, my goal isn’t just to teach our students how to give a powerful presentation. It’s about helping students unlock their potential, thinking critically, and building emotional resilience.

Sure, public speaking is the main gig, but life skills? That’s the bonus. I want every student in the club to feel empowered to step up, speak out, and become the kind of leader that makes everyone go, “Wow, I want to be like them!”

The Club is open to students who are passionate about improving their communication and leadership skills, in Grades 7-10. Interested students are encouraged to get in touch with the Leadership team of the Club.

Tailored activities: Shark Tank-style pitches, and more

When you join the Gavel Club, you’re not just signing up for another club to mark off on your schedule. We’ve got everything from Shark Tank-style pitches (yep, you can totally pretend to be on TV) to impromptu debates and Table Topics that’ll keep you on your toes. Trust me, no two meetings are the same, and I make sure to throw in a bit of variety to keep things spicy.

Each activity is designed to stretch your imagination and challenge you to think on your feet. And if you’re ever in doubt, remember: no one ever became a great speaker by staying in their comfort zone.

So, get ready to step out and shine — whether you’re pitching an idea or debating whether pineapple belongs on pizza (spoiler: it does, but that’s a different debate).

Feedback? More like the Secret Sauce for Success

If there’s one thing I’m passionate about, it’s feedback! But not the “you could’ve done better” kind. I’m talking about constructive, “Hey, you nailed it, but let’s try this next time” feedback that helps you grow. In our club, feedback isn’t a bad word — it’s a tool for improvement and a way to celebrate all the little victories that make you better every time you speak.

And, just to make it even more fun, I’m a huge advocate for peer mentorship. So, get ready to help each other out and cheer each other on. It’s not just about personal success; it’s about lifting each other up, because there’s room for everyone to shine.

Inclusivity and Leadership: Everybody’s welcome

Let’s be real: Gavel Club is all about inclusivity. Whether you’re an introvert who’s terrified of speaking in public or a natural-born performer who thrives on the spotlight, you’ll find a place here. I encourage everyone to take on leadership roles because, guess what?

Leadership is the best way to learn. And if you make a mistake? No biggie — we all learn from it, and it just makes the next round even better.

Life Skills: ‘Because we’re in this for the long haul’

Sure, public speaking is the main act, but let’s not forget the important life lessons we’re picking up along the way. Adaptability? Check. Teamwork? Check. Perseverance? Oh, absolutely.

These are the kind of values that don’t just help you crush it in the club, but will also serve you when you’re dealing with exams, group projects, or even just trying to survive a Zoom meeting.

Leaving a Legacy

Ultimately, my vision for the Gavel Club is simple: I want to help create a group of confident, articulate individuals who go out into the world and make an impact. So, whether you’re delivering a speech, leading a team, or just showing up to support a friend, know that you’re building a legacy of leadership, and growth that’s going to last long after you leave the club.

So, if you’re looking for a place to develop your voice, build confidence, and maybe even have a laugh while you do it, Gavel Club is the place for you. Let’s make some memories, tackle some challenges, and, of course, speak up like the leaders we’re meant to be.

Who’s ready to join me on this hilarious, inspiring, and transformational journey? I’ll be waiting with a microphone… and maybe some pineapple pizza for later.
