World Environment Day is celebrated on  June 5 every year. Environmental responsibility starts in the classroom, and educating the younger generation about sustainability is no longer an option – it’s a necessity.

At Global Indian International School (GIIS) Bangalore, the celebration of World Environment Day was an immersive, meaningful experience where students took centre stage through various World Environment Day activities aimed at promoting transformational change and instilling a love for nature.

Recognised as one of the top schools on Bannerghatta, Bangalore, we believe learning happens when children are connected to the world around them, and we help learners become future leaders in sustainability.

What is the theme for World Environment Day 2025?

In 2025, the theme for World Environment Day is “Beat Plastic Pollution.”This theme aims to raise awareness about the harmful effects of plastic pollution and promote solutions to reduce its impact.

This year’s World Environment Day seeks to rally communities globally to promote and fight for solutions. It highlights the increasing scientific data on the effects of plastic pollution while encouraging action to refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, and rethink the use of plastics.

The Urgency of Environmental Education

The environmental challenges we face are immense, from climate change and pollution to biodiversity loss. The children of today will inherit these challenges, and therefore, it is crucial to equip them with the knowledge, skills, and values that will enable them to become forces for good.

By integrating sustainability into the curriculum and events like World Environment Day activities for students, GIIS Bangalore helps young learners see themselves as future custodians of the Earth.

Engaging World Environment Day Activities at GIIS Bangalore

At GIIS Bangalore, the World Environment Day celebration was inspirational. Our campus came together in a vibrant celebration of nature, compassion, and collective responsibility under the theme “Roots of Happiness – Nature as Our Emotional Anchor.”

Nature Through the Eyes of Our Youngest Learners

Our youngest students led the charge with wonder and enthusiasm.

  • Our nursery students led the way with joyful curiosity. They participated in “Plant Play: Touch, Feel, and Discover!” – a sensory exploration of leaves, stems, and roots that allowed them to connect with the natural world through touch and play.
  • KG-1 students took part in a cheerful Green March to the Gandhi statue, marking their first step towards environmental advocacy.
  • KG-2 students joined in “Tree Huggers & Earth Lovers,” hugging trees and planting saplings alongside their parents, deepening their understanding and bond with the environment.

Art, Inclusion, and Community: A Living Mural

We welcomed children from Thayimane Ashram and their principal to our campus to join our celebrations. The students collaborated on a beautiful fabric mural – a shared work of art symbolising empathy, creativity, and environmental care.

Adding to the vibrancy, students’ clubs, our students –  Aalekh, Moun, and Kalapi performed expressively. Their performance filled the campus with music, movement, and colour, creating an environment of joy and harmony.

Primary Students Lead: Tree Plantations

The message of environmental responsibility extended to our primary students as well.

  • Grade 1 and 2 students engaged in a meaningful tree plantation activity with our school bus drivers. Together, they planted mango, lemon, cherry, blossom, tecoma, and praijatham saplings.
  • Grade 2 students also took the initiative to honour our real-life heroes – the traffic police. With kindness and respect, they distributed eco-friendly saplings, face masks, and juice to officers who work tirelessly to keep our roads safe.

Senior Students Tackle Climate Change

The day became a milestone with the launch of the Cambridge Climate Quest, which was a considerable development for graduating students.

This programme, which was created as part of the Cambridge curriculum in partnership with Cambridge Zero, gives students in Grades 8 to  12 the skills and information they need to address climate issues and spearhead sustainability initiatives through practical projects.

Nurturing Environment Stewards of Tomorrow

Our approach to celebrating Environment Day at GIIS Bangalore goes beyond annual events. Our educational philosophy has its roots in this concept, fostering a long-term commitment to sustainability.

World Environment Day at GIIS gives students a chance to take the lead in these efforts, and we empower them to do so. They understand why protecting natural resources is crucial, the power of coming together, and the benefits of working as a team.

This is a living example of our 9 GEMS Framework, which focuses on planting values in young minds; every experience reinforces our commitment to nurturing students. Our emphasis on holistic development, as evidenced by our proactive environmental programmes, makes us a preferred choice among schools in Bangalore.

Through the infusion of creativity, caring, and cooperation, GIIS prepares the students to be aware, confident, and committed as global citizens. We aim to ensure that every student at GIIS appreciates the need to actively participate in creating a sustainable and healthier world for all.

For parents exploring school admissions in Bangalore, GIIS Bangalore offers more than just academic excellence; it nurtures environmentally conscious, values-driven learners who are prepared to shape a better tomorrow.
