Schools worldwide are always looking for opportunities to help their students beyond academics, and the Global Indian International School, a pioneer in modern education, is no stranger to implementing fun activities to help young minds in their all-round development!

As one of the top international schools in Bangalore, the GIIS has created various events to promote extracurricular activities among our students.

Our Art Summer Camp at the Bannerghatta campus in April was a massive hit among the students, and the entire three-day camp was filled with exciting activities, fun, learning and relaxation!

At the GIIS, we always strive towards making learning fun, and a few of our most popular yearly camps, like the Art Summer Camp, do just that! Our school’s very own arts and crafts teacher, Mr Mohan, led the three-day camp and ensured that the students had fun with colours and expanded their perspectives on creativity, innovation and ingenuity!

Let us now understand why we at the Global Indian International School focus on helping our students explore extracurricular activities like painting, arts and crafts and how they benefit the young minds.

Painting, Arts & Crafts: A Path Towards Creativity & Self-Expression

A few benefits of arts, crafts and painting are –

A Medium For Self- Expression

It is vital for children to express their feelings and communicate what they think and want. Art and crafts is one such activity where kids can express their feelings and be expressive about their thoughts.

This activity can help the students communicate more articulately, making them better communicators and presenters, which is vital for their academic, social and personal development.

A Stress Buster

Crafts and other related activities like painting help relieve stress and encourage them to explore their imagination and creativity — skills. These skills  can spark innovation inside and outside the classroom, helping them become better thinkers and problem solvers.

Studies have also shown that painting and other artistic activities help students deal with anxiety and depression, making this extracurricular activity a gateway towards better mental health.

Helps In Cognitive Development

Artistic hobbies like painting and crafts can improve children’s cognitive skills and have been shown to improve the memory power of students, greatly helping them in their academics! The extracurricular activity can also help students tap into their critical thinking and logical reasoning skills, making them creative problem solvers.

Helps Build Motor Skills

Kids need refined motor skills to support their overall development, and crafts, which involve cutting, folding, and pasting, are one way to help students build them.

Arts and crafts help students improve their hand-eye coordination, problem-solving ability and  creative expression, making it a perfect activity for the overall development of young minds.

Now that we know the many benefits of arts and crafts let us look at how Mr Mohan and the GIIS, the best school in Bannerghatta Road, made the summer camp a three-day, fun-filled learning experience for young minds!

Art Summer Camp – Every Young Artist’s Dream Camp!

Day 1

A beautiful sunny day started with introductions and a brief schedule of how the three-day camp would look in the coming days. Mr Mohan briefed the students and parents on what each day would look like and the many fun-filled activities planned to enrich the sessions.

The journey began with kids exploring the many colours they use for painting, and our teachers helped them understand the concept of colour mixing. The fun activity piqued the curiosity of the young artists. After a few rounds of practical explanation, we saw children exploring the activity by mixing the colours of their choice to create  new bright and eye-catching colours.

In no time, plain white sheets started getting life as the young artists unleashed their creativity and imagination to create a few of the most beautiful and colourful art pieces. Round two of painting began as children started exploring more colours, making the entire day a session filled with surprises, learning, excitement, creativity and laughter!

Day 2

The second day began with the art teachers showing the students various shades of a single colour. The activity showcased how a single colour can have different uses and how perspective and attention to detail can lead to a journey full of surprises, innovation and creativity.

The kids then started exploring the shades of the primary colours and, with this foundation, began experimenting with various other vibrant colours to create beautiful paintings they were proud of!

Day two ended on a high note as the kids were eager to show their artwork to their parents.

Day 3

The final day was by far the most exciting for the young minds, as their favourite teacher, Mr Mohan, introduced them to wall hangings using daily items.

The students were then given ice cream sticks, glitters, crayons, paints, and other art supplies to create their own wall hangings. With their imagination and creative freedom, the kids started making unique and colourful wall hangings. As expected, the young artists used their lessons from the previous days and made their crafts more vibrant, making themselves and Mr Mohan proud.

As the day ended, parents interacted with the team and suggested a few ideas to conduct more such camps across the academic calendar and to include various other activities like painting classes for families and more.

Parents also suggested conducting team-building crafts for adults and children to improve parent-kids bonding and to help families spend more time together while doing what they love.

Overall, the Art Summer Camp at the GIIS Bannergatha Campus was a huge success among the kids and parents, motivating us to conduct more such events where learning meets fun for the holistic development of young and bright minds.

The event showcased the benefits of extracurriculars and allowed kids to spend their vacation doing something they love with their friends, making our art camp a favourite among parents.

We hope this article has given you a brief idea of how our Art Summer Camp was conducted and what our students learnt from the three-day camp, making their summer vacations exciting and filled with fun and learning!
