Mathematics has always been a daunting subject for learners. Some students have a natural knack for calculations and like doing maths. However, many students will benefit from easy math tricks to simplify their tasks. Vedic Mathematics is one such way that makes working with big calculations easier. The top CBSE schools in Nagpur, like GIIS, introduce these techniques to children. It helps them improve their math skills and gives them a new perspective on life as they see the same calculations done with different methods.  For more top tips for excelling in mathematics, check out our guide on GIIS Nagpur’s Top 11 Mathematics Strategies

Let’s Get to Know Some Fun Facts About Vedic Maths

Mental Technique:

Vedic Maths is a way to improve our mental capacity to process information and make quick calculations. It helps you reduce the time spent on tedious calculations, which you would normally do by hand. Instead, it lets your mind use simple Vedic Math tricks to do the calculations without pen and paper. This mental rigor complements our STEM labs—read about the role of robotics in education at GIIS

Set of Sutras:

Vedic Maths has many formulae, also known as sutras, which show detailed explanations of why the tricks give accurate results. Advanced mathematicians study these sutras.

Zero Possibility of Error:

These sutras and their results have been verified many times. You cannot find errors in these formulae. They are also taught at CBSE secondary schools to help students with bigger calculations during exams.

Makes maths Fun:

Mathematics is rarely seen as a subject that makes children enthusiastic. However, using mental calculations and easy tricks makes the subject easy and fun to work with for children.

Let’s Explore Some Easy Vedic Math Tricks to Help You With Your Next Set of Calculations

Addition of two-digit numbers

Take two big numbers like 45 and 67. Try to add them using these steps:

      1. Check which number is the closest tens multiple for the numbers you want to add. Here, the 10s multiple closest to 45 is 50, and for 67, it is 70.
      2. Now, add the tens multiples. Here, 50+ 70 = 120.
      3. See how much 45 is less than 50. The answer is 5. And, how much less is 67 compared to 70? The answer is 3.
      4. Now add the deficiency numbers together. You will get 5+3 = 8.
      5. Subtract the deficiency number from the total of the tens multiples. You will get 120-8 = 112
      6. Your answer to 45+ 67 is 112.

You can apply the same for three-digit numbers as well.
For instance: 335 + 678

      1. You can see that 100’s multiples nearest to these numbers are 400 and 700, with the total as 1100.
      2. Now see how far they are from the 100’s multiples. You will get 65 and 22, respectively.  Add them up to get their total, i.e, 87.
      3. Now, you just have to subtract 87 from 1100 to get 1013 as your answer.

Subtracting any numbers from bigger multiples of 10 like 1000, 10,000, and so on.

For our first try, we will go with the numbers 3456 from 10,000.

      1. Start this trick by subtracting the first 3 digits from 9 and only the last digit from 10.
      2. After following the first step, you will get the numbers 6, 5 and 4.
      3. For the second part, you have to subtract the last digit 9 from 10. This will give you the remainder 4.
      4. So, your answer is, 10,000-3456 = 6544.

Now, try 1,00,000- 03456

      1. First thing is to add a zero at the beginning of the subtracted number. We do this to make the digit count the same as the zeros after 1 in the first number.
      2. After the first step you will have gotten the digits 9, 6, 5 and 4.
      3. Now, you just have to get the last digit from 10. Here, 10-6 will give you 4.
      4. So your answer for 1,00,000 – 3456 or 03456 is 96544.

Maths trick for fast calculation while multiplying two-digit numbers with 11

Take two random numbers and apply this trick. Let’s start with 27 X 11.

      1. First, split the two digits in our first number and add a gap in the middle. Here, this will be 2_7.
      2. Add 2+7 and put this number in the middle. Here, the answer is 9. When we place 9 in the middle of the 2 split numbers, we get 297.
      3. Hence, your answer for 27 X 11 is 297.

Let’s try this with a bigger number like 88 X 11.

      1. First, split the two digits 8_8.
      2. Now to find out the middle number, add 8+8 = 16.
      3. The 1 from the 16 will get carried over to the first 8, as the carry over goes to the number ahead in maths. This makes your answer (8+1) with 6 in the middle and 8 at the end. This makes it 968.

Doing multiplication for the numbers that are close to multiples of 100

This trick will leave you speechless as it involves multiplying through simple addition and subtraction.

      1. Let’s take the numbers 92X 84
      2. You first have to identify the closest powers of 10 to these numbers. You will get 100 for both.
      3. Write down how far these numbers are from 100. 92 is 8 numbers away, and 84 is 16 numbers far.
      4. Imagine them in this format:    95 | -5
                                                     X 94 | -6
                                                     ————
      5. Cross-subtract the deficiency numbers from any of the two numbers you want to multiply
      6. for the first part of the answer. Here, this will look like 95-4 = 89, and 94-5 is also 89.
      7. You will get 89 as the first part of the answer.
      8. Then, multiply the deficiency numbers, i.e, 5X6, which is 30.
      9. You will get the next part of the answer as 30.
      10. Visualise it like this:      95 | -5
                                         X 94 | -6
                                       ————-
                                          89  | 30
      11. You will see that the answer for 95 X 94 comes to 8930.

A fun multiplication trick for any two two-digit numbers

      1. For learning, let’s choose 24 and 36.
      2. First, you have to multiply the digits at the unit places of these numbers. You will get 4X6, which is 24.
      3. Then, multiply the digits at the tens place. Here, this is 2X3 = 6.
      4. The number we get now is 624.
      5. For the next step, you have to cross-multiply the digits of the two numbers. By doing this you will get 2X6 as 12, and 4X3 also 12. Then, simply sum up these numbers, and you get 24.
      6. Now leave the unit place and add the sum number to the 1st multiplication number we got. Here, we get 624
                                                        +24
                                                        ——–
                                                         864
      7. Your answer is 864.

A simple way to divide large numbers by 5

  •  Let’s take any large number like 270 and divide it by 5.
      1. You have to first multiply the number by 2. Here, you will get the answer is 540.
      2. Now, simply add a decimal after the unit place of the number. Here, you will get 54.0.
      3. Hence, your answer is 54.

Using these easy math tricks helps students fall in love with a tough subject. It also makes their exam calculations go quicker, so they can save time. India is a big country with many scholars and discoveries like Vedic Maths. The top schools in the country are now trying to help their students reach new heights by nurturing their unique talents. Parents should look for schools where their children  can get the right facilities and attention so they can develop their talents too. For a lot of parents, the admission procedure in schools can feel overwhelming. At GIIS the counseling team works to support parents at each step.
