With open inquiry, students come up with their own questions, create their plans, and share their findings. This helps them become independent, and their learning gets more personalised.

Students engage in a larger project that includes research, the use of data, and the eventual presentation of results. For instance, students might investigate how water is being conserved in the area and come up with ways to reduce water waste in their community.

Each of these types helps children move from guided learning to self-directed discovery, preparing them for the real world where curiosity and initiative matter most.

  • Math teachers might ask students to calculate household energy usage to understand real-life applications of numbers.

Tips for Implementing Inquiry-Based Learning

For teachers and parents who want to encourage curiosity, here are some tips for implementing inquiry-based learning effectively:

  • Allow children to ask as many questions as they wish. Curiosity is where learning begins.
  • Encourage exploration through hands-on activities and observations.
  • Replace “telling answers” with “guiding discovery.” Ask, “What do you think?” or “How can we find out?”
  • Provide a safe space where children can make mistakes and learn from them.
  • Reflect on what was learned. Ask children to explain their discoveries in their own words.

When adults shift from instructing to guiding, children learn how to think instead of what to think.
