Every year, World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5th. This day serves as a global reminder that the health of our planet is deeply connected to our choices and actions. For students, especially young learners, it’s an ideal opportunity to engage meaningfully with nature and understand their role in protecting it.

Why Is World Environment Day Important?

If you’re wondering about World Environment Day, it’s a United Nations initiative started in 1972 at the Stockholm Conference. Since then, over 150 countries have joined the global movement to drive awareness and action toward protecting our environment.

The history of World Environment Day teaches us that this is not just a symbolic celebration. It’s an annual call to action to combat global environmental issues such as plastic waste, pollution, and climate change.

This year’s World Environment Day theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution”, is especially relevant for India, which generates nearly 9 million tonnes of plastic annually—accounting for around 20% of the world’s total plastic waste.

Why Schools Play a Key Role?

UnderstandiNeed to Postginning. Schools have a responsibility to make environmental awareness part of everyday learning.

At GIIS, both Hadapsar and Balewadi campuses show how integrating sustainability into the curriculum and activities helps create a lasting impact. Children learn from textbooks and experience—by doing, observing, and reflecting.

Some highly effective World Environment Day activities include:

  • Composting food waste at school or home
  • Nature walks to explore biodiversity
  • Eco-campaigns on water conservation or waste reduction
  • Energy audits to track and cut down on electricity use
  • Adopt-a-tree projects to encourage long-term responsibility

Learning by Doing: Earth Day at GIIS Hadapsar

At one of the Best Primary Schools in Pune, GIIS Hadapsar celebrated Earth Day with vibrant, hands-on activities that sparked curiosity and awareness in students from Kindergarten to Grade 5.

Kindergarten (GMP)

The youngest learners explored the idea of waste segregation. Teachers guided them in distinguishing wet waste (like fruit peels) from dry waste (such as paper and plastic). Students then took part in a colour-coded sorting game using green and blue bins to reinforce the concept.

In addition, they made Earth Day-themed art from recycled materials, sang songs about the planet, and pledged to conserve water, plant trees, and properly dispose of waste—proving that even the smallest learners can make a difference.

Grades 1 and 2

The focus here was on renewable energy. Grade 1 students crafted paper windmills and learned how wind energy works. As fans and gentle puffs of air spun their creations, the concept became tangible and exciting.

Grade 2 students explored solar energy by using magnifying glasses to focus sunlight on paper. They observed how different materials reacted to heat, making the science of the sun both fun and safe to learn.

Grades 3 to 5

Older students wrote and illustrated mini flip-books titled “I Can Help the Earth By…”. These thoughtful pieces reflected their understanding of sustainability, inspired by global environmental milestones like Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring and the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill.

The Earth Day celebrations at GIIS Hadapsar helped students not only understand World Environment Day activities but also internalise the deeper values behind them.

iCare: Earth Day at GIIS Balewadi

At one of the most forward-thinking International Schools in Pune, GIIS Balewadi chose the theme “iCare”—highlighting how empathy and sustainability go hand in hand.

Global Montessori Plus (GMP)

Young learners and their parents contributed to a creative ‘Trash Art Gallery’, where bottle caps turned into colourful animals, and recycled paper became vibrant landscapes. Through art and play, these preschoolers connected with environmental issues in a memorable way.

If you’re searching for eco-conscious Pre Schools in Pune, activities like these show how early learning environments can help shape mindful habits.

Grades 1 to 5

The older students focused on the global World Environment Day theme, Restore Our Earth.

  • Grades 1 and 2 made posters on the topic “Save Earth,” expressing their thoughts through images and slogans.
  • Grades 3 to 5 created bookmarks using reused and upcycled materials, combining creativity with sustainability.

The day ended with a school-wide pledge to adopt greener practices and spread awareness about renewable energy and eco-friendly living.

From One Day to Daily Action

While World Environment Day is a focal point, real impact comes from everyday action. That’s why GIIS encourages students and families to practise sustainability all year round.

Whether it’s turning off unused lights, using cloth bags, or growing a home garden—these small actions matter. They build habits. They influence peers. They change communities.

By turning awareness into action, GIIS Hadapsar and GIIS Balewadi offer excellent models of how schools can celebrate World Environment Day in a way that leaves a lasting impression.

Through World Environment Day activities rooted in real-world learning, they are helping students become responsible, empathetic, and environmentally aware citizens.
