What Is IB PYP?
The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) is an internationally recognised curriculum framework for children aged 3 to 12. Rather than teaching subjects in isolation, IB PYP builds learning around inquiry — encouraging children to ask questions, make connections across subjects, and take ownership of how they learn. At GIIS Tokyo, this runs from the early years through Grade 5.
What Is a Unit of Inquiry?
A Unit of Inquiry is the heart of the PYP classroom — a structured, weeks-long exploration of a single central idea (for example, “how communities work” or “how systems in our body function”) that draws on multiple subjects at once: language, maths, science, and social studies all feed into the same big question. Teachers guide students through phases of research, reflection, and action, and assess understanding along the way rather than through a single test. At this open house, our IB PYP team will walk you through a real Unit of Inquiry from start to finish.
