In November 2025, GIIS Tokyo etched its name into global education history. We were awarded the prestigious Deming Prize for Total Quality Management (TQM) – making Global Schools Group (GSG) the first educational institution in the world, among schools and universities, to receive this honour. Often referred to as the “Oscars of Quality”, the Deming Prize is usually awarded to world-class corporations, not classrooms and corridors. This landmark-win signals something powerful: that a school can match the world’s best organisations in discipline, rigour and continuous improvement, while keeping children at the heart of everything.
The prize signifies GIIS Tokyo’s focus on the development of students, teachers and staff through innovation and continuous improvement, which has contributed to operational excellence. This world-first recognition comes on the back of over 650 awards already won by GSG for educational quality and business excellence across its 64 campuses in 12 countries. The Deming Prize now crowns that legacy.
Deming: More Than Just a Trophy
Established in 1951 by the Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers (JUSE), the Deming Prize is one of the world’s most glorious recognitions for excellence in Total Quality Management. It honours organisations that embed quality into everyday practice and process, from strategy and operations to people development and customer experience, while cultivating a culture of continuous improvement, operational excellence and stakeholder satisfaction.
Deming is not just an award, but a way of thinking and working, which demands that an organisation:
- Uses data and evidence to drive decisions
- Develops people at every level
- Improves processes continuously rather than relying on one-off initiatives
- Respects the “voice of the customer”. In our case, our stakeholders are our students, parents. teachers and staff
For GIIS Tokyo, the Deming Prize recognises a school that treats quality not as an event, but as a lifelong habit.
What the Deming Win Means to GIIS Tokyo Families
For GIIS Tokyo’s students, parents, teachers and staff, the Deming Win is deeply personal.
- For students, it means learning in a school where every process, from classroom teaching to assessments, safety, co-curricular activities and university guidance, is continuously refined and improved.
- For parents, it signals a school that treats them as partners, actively listens to their feedback and uses it to strengthen systems and outcomes.
- For teachers and staff, it is a powerful acknowledgement that their daily discipline, innovation and care meet the highest global benchmark for quality.
Deming at the Heart of Our Journey: A Legacy Built Over Time
Deming may be a 2025 milestone for GIIS Tokyo, but the journey started long ago with the establishment of the Global Centre of Education Excellence (GCEE) in Singapore to institutionalise global standards in education based on the Malcolm Baldrige, EFQM and Deming models to create a unified Global Education Excellence Model for all the GSG schools.
Today, GIIS Tokyo stands as a leading MEXT-accredited K–12 international school that thrives on this philosophy. From its 9GEMS™ holistic framework to platforms such as GIISMUN Tokyo, which nurtures diplomacy, leadership and global mindedness, the campus consistently blends academic rigour with character development.
Seen through this lens, the Deming Prize is not a surprise, but a logical next chapter of a long, well-planned journey.
A Win for Today, A Promise for Tomorrow
At its core, the Deming Win tells a profoundly human story of:
- teachers who go the extra mile to make learning a rewarding experience
- students who rise to challenges with resilience and curiosity
- parents who place their trust in a shared vision of excellence
- leaders who push for better systems so that every stakeholder can thrive
For GIIS Tokyo and GSG, this prize doesn’t just decorate a wall. It deepens a legacy built over years – of benchmarking against the world’s best, of bringing top-tier international curricula to Tokyo and all the other GSG schools and of nurturing compassionate, confident global citizens.
The Way Forward
Building on this historic Deming Win, we at GIIS Tokyo, will continue strengthening our TQM practices in classrooms, operations and community engagement, ensuring that every new initiative that we undertake is anchored in data, reflection and student well-being. We will use this global recognition as a springboard to innovate further, exploring new learning pathways, deepening partnerships with our stakeholders and inspiring the next generation of GIIS learners to not just chase success, but to redefine what excellence in education can be.
