Cambridge IGCSE: A comprehensive guide for parents

Cambridge Curriculum

The Cambridge Assessment International Education, recognised by top universities across the globe, offers students a diverse range of learning options. This prestigious international curriculum provides a robust and comprehensive education pathway for students aged 5 to 19. The Cambridge pathway is segmented into four stages: Primary (age 5+), Lower Secondary (age 11+), Upper Secondary (age 14+), Cambridge Advanced (age 16+).

Subject choices

IGCSE offers over 70 subjects, which can be combined in various ways by schools. The subjects are grouped into five categories:

  1. Group 1: Languages
    • English, English as a Second Language, Hindi as a second language, French, Tamil GCE O Level, Mandarin
  2. Group 2: Humanities and Social Sciences
    • Economics, Literature, Global Perspectives, Environmental Management
  3. Group 3: Sciences
    • Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Management
  4. Group 4: Maths
    • Maths (w/o coursework for Grade 9), Additional Maths (for Grade 10)
  5. Group 5: Creative, Technical & Vocational, Business Studies, Computer Science, Design & Technology, Global Perspectives

The flexibility of the IGCSE curriculum allows students to tailor their education to their interests and career aspirations.

IGCSE assessments and grading

IGCSE students are graded on a scale from A* to G, with the grading system widely recognised by universities globally. The assessments, designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of a student’s learning status, include:

● Two Cyclic Tests (CTs)

● Semester 1 exams

● Pre-board exams

● Semester 2 exams

● Cyclic Test 3

Exams are held between May and June, with Hindi exams occurring in November. The assessment methods include written exams, oral exams, listening, and coursework, allowing teachers to personalise the learning experience and support each student’s progress.

The below table shows the percentage mark range for each grade.

The Cambridge Pathway at GIIS

At GIIS, students can enroll in the Cambridge Lower Secondary Programme (CLSP) for Grades 6-8, which naturally progresses to the Upper Secondary programme – IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) for Grades 9-10. The curriculum places a strong emphasis on practical skills and knowledge, equipping learners with a well-rounded education that goes beyond traditional academic boundaries and prepares them to achieve excellent IGCSE grades.

GIIS students consistently excel in their IGCSE examinations, reflecting their dedication and hard work. In the IGCSE 2023 results:

● 100% of our students achieved the ICE Distinction.

● 13 students attained A*s in all subjects they attempted.

● 12 students secured 9As.

● Out of 128 students, more than 80% achieved A* and A grades, with over 10% attaining Perfect Scores.
