A detailed guide on various Cambridge Stages

Cambridge IGCSE

The sets of skills and knowledge that a student aims to acquire at different stages of their education path are called key stages. Students are required to do classroom work, homework, projects, develop skill sets, and standards of achievements, which are later documented in the portfolios as part of their learning process. These portfolios help parents and students keep a track of their growth and development through their school life.

Global Indian International School is one of the best schools in Malaysia that fosters students with the best Cambridge IGCSE curriculum. GIIS has four Key Stages ranging between Primary 1 and Secondary 11 classes. Let us understand in detail these key stages and their significance.

‍

Key Stage 1

Key stage 1 is meant for the students between age groups 5 and 7 years old. It is the stepping stone for a student’s education and helps them develop skills based upon their early learning duration.

The core subjects taught to these students are English, Science, and Mathematics over a span of two years. There are a wide array of other cross-curricular projects that help young kids build their own learning styles, give a boost to their curiosity, and have the ambition to explore the horizons of the world.

All the core subjects are further bifurcated into different units that help them with interactive learning while achieving their goals. Let us understand in detail

â—Ź English – The subject incorporates story-based units with traditional and fairytale stories from different cultures and worlds. Students also learn about different kinds of poetry, usage of dictionaries, the importance of labels, and instructions that help them carry out their quotidian tasks with ease.

â—Ź Mathematics – The subject covers the topics like addition, subtraction, counting, shapes, etc. With higher grades, students learn about 3D shapes, length, weight, capacity, money, and data handling solutions.

â—Ź Science – The most popular topics under science are pushes and pulls, health and growth, sorting, light and dark, plants and animals, utilizing material and flora and fauna.

Key Stage 2

Once your kid turns 8 years old, he or she enters Key Stage 2. It is in fact a thrilling stage where a student begins to learn advanced skills while exploring more in the subjects. A student begins to practice skills like cooperation and sportsmanship that help them grow socially and personally.

The tenure of Key Stage 2 is three years which focuses again on the core subjects – English, Science, and Mathematics. The basic goal remains the same as Key Stage 1. However, the child is introduced to a new language like French.

The mission of Key Stage 2 is to prepare the students well for their secondary education. In this stage, the school conducts a wide array of assessments through the feedback by teachers for each student. A student is also analyzed on the basis of their progress checkers and checkpoint exams.

Here is what you can expect your child to learn in core subjects in Key Stage 2 –

â—Ź English – The student learns about the difference between fiction and non-fiction. They can now learn the language with basic reading and writing abilities with the help of descriptions, narratives, information, and explanatory texts. The texts come from different topics and cultures around the world.

The students learn how to write book reviews and describe different characters based on what they learned. They also learn to produce texts like articles, letters, notices, etc, and how to structure them well.

â—Ź Mathematics – It is now time for your child to learn the art of mathematical skills with the help of discoveries, theory, and practical examples. The students can now do calculations with two and three digits and learn to multiply and divide numbers. There is also an introduction to fractions and measurements.

â—Ź Science – Attain the art of independent thinking and reasoning in Key Stage 2. Students learn to structure discoveries and study in detail topics like plant life, oceans, space, human body, rainforests, etc.

‍

Key Stage 3

Key Stage 3 begins when your kid turns 11 years old. The stage marks the beginning of the early stages of adulthood wherein students learn to develop academic and social skills to their full potential.

It’s a 3-year stage that remains robust on the core subjects and introduces new subjects like social science, history, and geography. Key Stage 3 prepares the students for the Cambridge IGCSE curriculum. The progress reports are maintained for each student and the portfolios help to keep an eye on their performance.

â—Ź English – The students begin to read and write above specific genres in the form of articles, reviews, letters, character analysis, poems, stories, etc. They even begin the understanding of reading and writing fables and producing persuasive advertising campaigns for NGOs.

â—Ź Mathematics – Students are introduced to topics like fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, and proportion along with algebra and probability.

â—Ź Science – Topics are further divided into biology, physics, and chemistry. Topics like cells and organisms, forces and motions, states of matter, and magnetism are introduced.

Key Stage 4

The Key Stage 4 syllabus is the most crucial of all. Students are now required to choose IGCSE subjects to enter this key stage. This stage has 7 different letter grades – A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. A is the top grade of all. Each grade is defined with a range of percentages that a student earns.

English, Mathematics, Biology, Physics, and Chemistry are taught at the core or extended level in the Key stage 4 syllabus. All the exams and pieces of the course are arbitrated and marked by the school.
