Tips to Parents by Teachers of Pre nursery School in Singapore

Parenting Tips

Wondering how preschool teachers make children do certain things, and how under their guidance they behave well and cooperate to do things willingly and happily?

Well, there’s no rocket science, there are some tips that can be applied at home which will make them act as obedient as in school.

Tips for Parents to Make Child Obedient at School

Expect more from your kids

For parents, their child is always small and they think it’s too early to burden them or believe it is too much for them to do certain things but raising the bar a little every day can help your child stretch their limits and excel in it. So always encourage them and give them a chance to try but make sure you are not overdoing it or putting a lot of pressure on them.

Let them do it themselves.

It is always suggested, when small things can be easily done by a child then parents should refrain from helping and avoid handing things over to their hand.

For eg:-

● Let them wear clothes by themselves. Guide them once and let them do it later.

● Let them wear shoes on their own.

● Ask them to bring plates while eating unless it is placed somewhere where their hands cannot be reached

No, we are not saying you to be cruel; we know you want to pamper your child but all these things will make them self reliant.  Again, do not overdo it, do not force and do not expect them to do all things.

Do not help them instantly

Do not try to fix things for them, let them do it. In case they are not able to do it, guide them on how to do it so they can learn to do it later by themselves.

For eg:-

If you see your child trying to pull a book from a shelf, assemble toys etc Just wait and watch and let them do it; this will make them use their creative thinking and you might be surprised to know that the little child can use tricks and imaginations that even you didn’t know.

Note:-The goal is to make a child feel confident and use their creative mind but make sure they are safe.

Distraction is the key

If your child is doing certain things that you don’t want them to do, instead of directly telling them not to, distract them with other things.

For eg:-

if they are fighting with their siblings, distract them by asking them if they want to draw a picture or read a short story together.

Use tricks

If your child does not do things or refuses to do as asked, encourage them by turning it into a game or play. Forcing them will make them more stubborn.

For eg:-

Use funny accents to persuade them, reward them etc

Always use Timer

Always set a timer for things.

For eg:-

● ”It is time to study or play”.

● “You have 10 minutes left to finish things”

● “You need to get ready or leave in 5 minutes”.

This is especially useful during transition time, from play to study or from videogames to sleep. This will prepare them in advance and it will not affect their mood or make them cranky and irritative. It also helps them learn time management.

Real-Life Scenarios

Remember, you won’t always be there to rescue your child; show them how to sort out things, teach them how to behave in a certain scenario and other practical real-life things, so that they can handle things independently.

Prepare them

The beginning of the nursery is the time when children get sad, most of them cry but as time passes, they get used to it. So prepare them to stay with others, let them be out with other family members or let them play with other children for hours daily.

These will prepare them better when they have to  stay away from you. Also teach them where they are going and for how many hours it will be and what they will experience etc.

Small Effective Tips

● Praise your child frequently for doing certain things, even if it is the same thing, this makes them act obedient and instil a habit in them.

● Consistency is the key, you cannot expect them to do things every day; asking them regularly will instil the habit in them.

● Bribing your child for doing their things will instil a bad habit in them and they might get used to the idea that they need to be bribed in order to do things.

● Always be polite and request them to help you instead of ordering them or giving stern instructions. They should get the feeling that they are helping their parents instead of doing some task.

● In case your child is fighting over a toy or other things with another child, show them how to share things, encourage teamwork.

● If your child is nervous about spending time apart, give them some tangible things, For eg: Let them carry your picture or their favourite toy as having a tangible thing will make them less anxious.

Hope these tips could be of great help to many parents.
